5 Things We Learned About Your Favourite Club This Season (After Just One Match)
One matchweek in, and we’ve already seen thunderbolts, tactical surprises, debut dreamland, and the usual dose of controversy.
Liverpool hit the ground running in attack, but still can’t defend to save their lives. Arsenal snatched a huge win at Old Trafford, while United somehow managed to dominate everything but the scoreline.
Manchester City, meanwhile, have new boys making Etihad dreams look like blockbuster reality, and Chelsea… well, let’s just say Stamford Bridge fans already look stressed.
One weekend doesn’t define a season, but it does set the tone. Here’s what we learned from the five clubs everyone’s watching, and what might happen next weekend.
Liverpool: Fire in Attack, Smoke in Defence (Goals and Holes Galore!)
Ekitike scores on his debut, and Chiesa and Salah eventually win it when Bournemouth equalise. Liverpool’s attack is already cooking. The front three look frightening, and on their day, they’ll rip anyone apart.
The problem? Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté look more like traffic cones than defensive leaders when actually tested. Bournemouth put two past them with relative ease, and without a proper defensive midfielder, the gaps in midfield look cavernous.
Arne Slot knows goals win you games, but leaky defences cost you titles. Unless Liverpool buys or manufactures a Fabinho clone, this imbalance might define their season.
Chelsea: All Shine, No Spark
A goalless home draw to Crystal Palace is not how Chelsea wanted to start the season. They controlled the ball, they had the flair, but when it came to scoring… nothing. Even without Nicolas Jackson, they never really looked like scoring.
Yes, Cole Palmer showed glimpses, but without goals, all Chelsea’s neat triangles mean very little. Enzo Maresca’s men look like they’re caught between being a possession machine and an actual winning team.
Manchester United: Sharp but Toothless
United fans must feel cursed. They played Arsenal off the park for large stretches, pressed hard, looked more aggressive, but somehow lost 1–0. Cunha ran like a man possessed, Mbeumo was lively, and Bruno Fernandes created more chances than an overexcited FIFA gamer. The problem? Toothless in front of goal.
The Red Devils look sharper than last season, but finishing and game management remain issues. Losing to Arsenal at home in week one already sets the alarm bells ringing.
Arsenal: Winning Ugly Again (And Not Loving It)
Mikel Arteta’s men didn’t sparkle at Old Trafford, but they got the job done. And that’s a scary sign for everyone else. Arsenal weren’t dominant, but they were disciplined, compact, and ruthless when it mattered. Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard ran the midfield, while Saka provided the spark that led to the winner. Gyökeres lumbered at times; a reminder of just how freakishly nimble and agile Haaland is for his size.
It wasn’t champagne football, but it was rugged behaviour: winning without playing well. Arsenal fans will be smug but cautious, and rightly so. Maybe a new signing before the window runs out can help them figure out how to consistently score with set pieces.
Manchester City: New Kids, Same Old Domination
Man City look scary. Not just because they smashed Wolves 4–0 away, but because their new signings have already clicked. Tijani Reijnders scored one and set up Erling Haaland, who reminded us he still eats goals for breakfast with a brace. Rayan Cherki also got in on the act, scoring on debut like he’s been playing under Pep for years.
City’s ability to refresh and reload is what makes them a dynasty. Haaland back in full flow plus shiny new weapons? Terrifying.
