The Bankers have reduced Kabras’ lead to just two points with as many rounds remaining in the National Sevens Circuit.

Kabras Sugar’s lead at the top of the National Sevens Circuit standings has reduced to just two points following their third-place finish at the Christie Sevens in Nairobi over the weekend.

KCB claimed the Christie Sevens title following a 17-12 win over Strathmore Leos in the Cup final at the RFUEA Grounds on Sunday to cut the Sugar Millers’ advantage with the leaders now on 80 points while the Bankers have 78.

Victory saw KCB return to the winners’ podium for the second time after their cup triumph in the season-opening Dala Sevens before following it up with back-to-back third-place finishes at Driftwood and Prinsloo Sevens.

It was a tough outing for Kabras who had come into the tournament as heavy favourites, having reached the final of the opening three legs of the National Sevens Circuit, winning the last two, in Mombasa and Nakuru.

The Sugar Millers were forced to settle for third place at Christie after edging Nakuru 19-12 while Mwamba RFC finished fifth following a 14-7 win over tournament hosts Kenya Harlequin.

Kabras had come to the tournament holding a seven-point lead over KCB but with the latter collecting the maximum 22 on offer, the Kakamega-based side are left looking over their shoulders heading into the final two rounds, the Tisap and Kabeberi Sevens.

Strathmore were the biggest gainers at Christie, collecting 19 points from their second-place finish, which took their tally to 63 points and third on the log after four legs.

Harlequin are fourth on the table with 58 points while Menengai Oilers dropped to fifth on 56 points after managing 10 in Nairobi having reached the final and semi-final in the previous two rounds.

Mwamba, who have collected 13 points in each of the four rounds, are sixth on the table with 52 points.

The circuit will take a two-week break before the penultimate leg, Tisap Sevens, in Eldoret from September 2-3.

The Eldoret leg will likely give a clear indication of where the National Sevens Circuit title will be headed with holders Oilers having it all to do to catch up with the leading duo if they are to retain their crown.
