NSC has enforced anti-doping rules, disqualifying Athletes at the National Sports Festival

In a move to uphold the integrity of the ongoing National Sports Festival, tagged "Gateway Games 2024," the National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced that athletes with anti-doping issues are barred from competing for medals.

The decision was reached following a strategic joint meeting between the Main Organising Committee and the Local Organising Committee of the Games held on Monday.

The NSC emphasised that this action aligns with global best practices and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code.

NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade stressed the commission's commitment to ensuring a clean competition.

"The issue of anti-doping is one important mandate of the Commission to ensure that Nigeria is devoid of drugs problems at both domestic and international competitions," he stated.

Olopade also highlighted the importance of the recently passed National Anti-Doping Law.

He said, "We are happy now that the National anti-doping law has finally been passed by our sports loving President, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the ripple effect of such a landmark fear must swiftly be felt in our Sports starting with the current Sports Festival."

The NSC has released the names of the affected athletes, who are now ineligible to win medals at the Games: Marcus Okon (Akwa Ibom State) - Para Athletics, Ayabeke David Opeyemi (Bayelsa State) - Gymnastics, Kareem Shukurat (Lagos State) - Kickboxing, Omole Dolapo Joshua (Bayelsa State) - Kickboxing, Ogunsemilore Cynthia (Bayelsa State) - Kickboxing, Animashaun Sofia (Lagos State) - Para powerlifting.
