Formula 1: Alonso believes top 4 teams untouchable for the rest of the season

Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso believes the Formula 1 top four teams (McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull) will remain out of reach for the rest of the field throughout the remaining 12 races of the season.

According to the Spaniard, the fact that many teams have already shifted their focus to their 2026 cars, which will come into effect when the all-new technical regulations take effect, will make it very difficult to challenge the leading teams.

The two-time champion believes that minimal upgrades will be introduced by any team for the remainder of the season, making a shift in the balance of power almost impossible.

What Alonso said

According to reports from Sportal, Alonso said, "The top four teams are far ahead of the rest, so the leading eight cars will be untouchable until the end of the season.

"No one will have many upgrades from now on, so we’ll need something extraordinary like in Austria, where two of those eight cars (Max Verstappen and Andrea Kimi Antonelli) didn't finish.

"That opens up the possibility to fight for sixth and seventh places. We were lucky to finish seventh in Austria, but that's not normal. Usually, we're fighting for ninth and tenth, which is a good weekend for us.

"We know 2026 is a good opportunity, not only for Aston Martin, but for many teams wanting to become top teams. Next year, there's a rules reset, and everyone wants to be in a position to fight the big teams, and that presents a good opportunity," Alonso explained.
