Brazilian legend and World Cup winner sustains body burns after getting involved in domestic fire accident

Brazilian football legend and former Inter Milan star Lucio is currently hospitalised in intensive care due to burns he sustained on several parts of his body.

Lucio was a commanding and powerful centre-back who had a glittering career in both Europe and South America. 

He played for Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and briefly Juventus before returning to Brazil, where he represented clubs like São Paulo and Palmeiras.

After an impressive 22-year professional career, which concluded in 2019 with 17 team titles, he retired from football.

Lucio hospitalised

Lucio was involved in a domestic incident on Thursday that led to several burns before being taken to the Brasilia hospital to receive treatment.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Lucio suffered burns in a home accident. The details regarding the extent and cause of his injuries remain unknown.

The medical facility released a statement indicating that Lucio's condition is 'stable, conscious, and under constant observation.'

Lucio was a pivotal figure in the Brazil national football team's defensive line, notably during their victorious 2002 FIFA World Cup campaign. 

His tenure with the national team was marked by 105 international caps, scoring four goals, and leading Brazil to two editions of the FIFA Confederations Cup.

For clubside, he also played a key part in Inter Milan's treble-winning season under Jose Mourinho in 2010. 

In just two years with Inter, he achieved a remarkable haul of silverware, including the Serie A title, two Coppa Italia trophies, the Champions League, the Supercoppa Italiana, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

His illustrious club career with the German giants Bayern Munich was also remarkably successful, adorned with the achievement of securing three Bundesliga titles.
