A late Benjamin Sesko goal rescued Michael Carrick's unbeaten run as Manchester United manager

Michael Carrick came within minutes of losing his first match as Manchester United manager before a 96th-minute Benjamin Sesko equaliser rescued a point in a 1-1 draw against West Ham.

The Hammers looked set to inflict Manchester United's first defeat under Carrick after Tomas Soucek's goal, but were pegged back late on.

The hosts came into the game in improved form and started brightly, creating early chances through Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville. Bowen glanced a header wide from Summerville’s cross before the Dutch winger forced a save with a curling effort.

Michael Carrick’s side also showed threat from set pieces, with Harry Maguire heading wide and Luke Shaw seeing a low delivery cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Chances were limited as the half wore on, with key defensive interventions from Axel Disasi and Diogo Dalot at opposite ends. Dalot briefly put his side under pressure with a loose moment at the back, while Amad Diallo hit the side netting from a tight angle. Overall, the first half lacked tempo and clear openings.

The game burst into life after the break as West Ham took the lead, Tomáš Souček sliding Bowen through before finishing his captain’s cross through the goalkeeper’s legs. United pushed for a response and had a Casemiro header ruled out for offside.

Bowen went close again before United piled on pressure late, with chances for Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo and Joshua Zirkzee. However, West Ham were undone deep into stoppage time as Šeško flicked Mbeumo’s cross into the top corner in the 96th minute, extending United’s unbeaten league run to nine games.
