Super Eagles star Victor Boniface has been very clear about where he wants to spend the next season
Xhaka, 32, who spent two seasons at BayArena with Pulse Sports 30 star Victor Boniface, is no stranger to English football, having made 225 appearances for Arsenal during a nine-year stint at the club.
During this period, he scored 23 goals, registered 29 assists, and captained the Gunners to FA Cup victories twice, earning widespread recognition for his leadership, tactical intelligence, and gritty playing style.
Expressing his excitement about the move, Xhaka spoke to the club media saying:
“I’m very proud to be here. When I spoke to the club, I felt the energy and the mentality of everyone involved. It’s exactly what I wanted, and I have a very good feeling. We’re back to where this club needs to be, and we want to stay here to write our own history. I’m ready to help the team with my experience and quality. It’s been a long wait, but I’m here now, and I’m looking forward to it.”
Apart from his club achievements at Leverkusen, where he made 99 appearances, scored six goals, and provided nine assists, Xhaka remains an integral player for Switzerland’s national team.
Since taking over the captaincy in 2020, he has earned a record 137 caps, becoming the most capped Swiss player of all time. His consistent displays earned him a spot in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings, where he finished 16th.
Sunderland’s official announcement on Wednesday confirmed the signing, pending international clearance. The club emphasised their commitment to blending experience and leadership into their squad as they aim to establish themselves securely in the Premier League.
