The former Manchester United goalkeeper would have infuriated his former team's fanbase after touting one of their archrivals as the best defender in football history

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has labelled Liverpool icon Virgil van Dijk the best defender that has ever lived, putting him ahead of some of the greats of the game.

Foster in awe of van Dijk

Foster played for Manchester United, Birmingham, Watford, West Brom, and Wrexham before retiring in 2023 to focus on his podcast, where he made his recent claims about Liverpool defender van Dijk.

The former England international is clearly a huge fan of the Dutch defender and puts him at the top of his top 10 list of the best defenders in football history.

Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster said, “I've got one I think we probably will put in the top 10 [defenders list]. Some people would say about longevity, but I still think in the whole pantheon of centre-backs, this guy stepped the game up a little bit. I really do. Virgil van Dijk.”

Former Manchester United believes van Dijk is the best ever

Foster explained his reverence for van Dijk, saying, “I think for three years in a row, he was the best centre-back in the world. He had a bad injury and is probably still finding his feet from that.”

The former Manchester United and Watford goalkeeper also declared how highly he rates van Dijk for his best form with Liverpool, saying, “Virgil van Dijk, peak of his powers, is the best defender that has ever lived. I genuinely believe that. When Liverpool are winning the Champions League and Premier League, Virgil is the number one.

“People have just got short memories, and the cruciate ligament injury has probably taken a yard of pace off him.”

Van Dijk was named European Player of the Year in 2019 and also finished second in the race for the Ballon d’Or behind Lionel Messi, giving some credence to Foster’s claims.
