‘The club needs him to leave’ — Getafe trying to force Uche out despite Nigerian star’s reluctance
The drama around Chrisantus Uche’s future has taken centre stage at Getafe, with the Nigerian forward resisting an exit even as the club pushes for his sale.
Despite his impressive breakthrough in La Liga, Getafe are determined to cash in on him, leaving Uche caught in the middle of conflicting interests.
Super Eagles star under pressure to leave Getafe
At just 22, Uche has become one of La Liga’s most effective players, an incredible rise considering he was signed for only €550k from Spain’s third tier as a defensive midfielder.
Last season, he emerged as a key attacking weapon, making himself indispensable to Getafe manager Jose Bordalás, who has openly declared he is “totally against” losing him.
Despite this, financial pressure has forced club president Ángel Torres to strike a €20m deal with Premier League side Wolves, despite it being below Uche’s €25m release clause.
Torres admitted the deal was necessary to ease the club’s salary cap burden, stating bluntly: “The club needs him to leave, and if that’s the case, then he’ll leave.”
Uche digs in his heels amid mounting pressure
While Getafe and Wolves appear to have an agreement, Uche himself has no desire to depart Spain.
Reports suggest he is actively resisting the move, refusing to undergo a medical despite travelling to France, where one was supposedly arranged.
Diario AS claim Uche is trying to collapse the deal, feeling content in La Liga and unwilling to leave. Meanwhile, Torres insists the transfer will eventually go through, even as confusion swirls between him and Uche’s agent as well as Jorge Mendes, who is set to receive a major commission.
With Getafe already scouting replacements like Atlético’s Carlos Martín and Como’s Iván Azón, the club’s intentions are clear, yet Uche’s determination to stay has turned this into a transfer saga that could drag on.
