‘The best forward in the world now’ - Troost-Ekong honours Super Eagles hero Victor Osimhen
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has heaped glowing praise on teammate Victor Osimhen ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Playoff final against DR Congo.
Although Troost-Ekong usually avoids singling out individuals, the captain describes Osimhen as “the best forward in the world right now,” stating the striker’s exceptional form and impact on the national team.
Osimhen has been in incredible scoring form during the World Cup qualifiers, netting five goals in his last two matches against Gabon and Benin Republic.
Troost-Ekong says his praise goes beyond those recent performances, recognising the consistency and hunger Osimhen has displayed since breaking into the Super Eagles squad.
“Victor [Osimhen] is a very special player,” the captain said in a video on social media. “For me, he is the best forward in the world right now.”
“And I can’t just put that down to the last goals that he scored these last two games, because consistently he’s brought so much to the team for the last two, three years of him being the main forward for Nigeria.”
Troost-Ekong also reflected on Osimhen’s journey, noting his rapid rise since his first senior camp in 2019 during the Africa Cup of Nations.
“He’s getting some great experience, but he’s been the same player that’s been so hungry from the start,” he added.
As Nigeria prepare for the winner-takes-all showdown against DR Congo on Sunday night, Osimhen’s leadership and goal-scoring ability could be the deciding factor.
Troost-Ekong’s words show the confidence the team has in their star striker to lead them to World Cup qualification.
