Against Denmark, Lauren James scored to give England the victory, and she was unstoppable against China.

She contributed three assists and two superb goals to help England beat China 6-1 and advance as group winners with nine points from three games.

James was dismissed for stepping on Michelle Alozie of Nigeria in the round of 16.

To force a penalty shootout, England had to fight throughout the extra period without James.

After their penalty victory against Nigeria, England in the quarterfinal had a come from a goal down against Colombia.

An Alessia Russo goal was enough as England held on to move to the semifinals.

England faced off against co-hosts Australia for the chance to join Spain, who had already advanced to the final.

Russo sealed a comfortable win with England's third to their first-ever World Cup appearance.

Spain makes it to the final in style

A player uprising that called for the dismissal of head coach Jorge Vilda dominated Spain's preparation for the World Cup.

Vilda stayed, however, and his team had a great start, defeating Zambia 5-0 and Costa Rica 3-0.

In their final Group C game, Japan defeated Spain 4-0 despite having the majority of the possession.

Spain, though, made a strong comeback in the elimination rounds defeating Switzerland 5-1 to earn their first World Cup knockout victory.

In the quarterfinals, Spain face doff against the Netherlands, who finished second four years ago.

With her winning goal in the 111th minute, Salma Paralluelo, 19, made history for her nation by being the youngest scorer at a Women's World Cup.

Spain faced Sweden in the semifinals, and skipper Olga Carmona scored the winner in the 89th minute to spark wild celebrations among Spanish fans.

The Netherlands, runners-up four years ago, were Spain's quarter-final opponents as 19-year-old Salma Paralluelo became her country's youngest scorer at a Women's World Cup with her winner in the 111th minute.

Sweden were Spain's opponent in the semi-final and captain Olga Carmona scored an 89th-minute winner to spark wild scenes of jubilation among the Spanish supporters

Spain vs England preview

Even though Sarina Wiegman has already advanced to the final of four straight international tournaments, she will be hoping to avoid a repeat of the 2019 final, in which her Netherlands team was defeated 2-0 by the USA.

England defeated Spain over the course of 120 minutes to win their matchup in the quarterfinal of the European Championships.

It will mark the first time that neither the United States nor Germany will play in a Women's World Cup final.
