Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman has still refused to train with Atalanta, drawing criticism from a former Serie A and Premier League star
Ademola Lookman’s future at Atalanta has turned into one of Serie A’s most heated transfer sagas, with tensions spilling over into public criticism.
Italian legend Paolo Di Canio has now called out the Nigerian star for what he sees as unprofessional conduct in his push for a move to Inter Milan.
Di Canio slams Lookman's methods
Paolo Di Canio, the former West Ham, Napoli, and Lazio forward, did not hold back when assessing Lookman’s behaviour.
Speaking to Corriere Della Sera, Di Canio said: “In the Premier League they don’t even really know who Lookman is. Asking €50 million for him is over the top. But Atalanta are just doing their job.
“The player, on the other hand, is behaving badly: you have to train with your team even if you want to leave. Show some integrity and be professional. The Percassi family have done very well so far not to give in to his show of force.”
Lookman, who scored 20 goals and provided seven assists in 40 appearances last season, has reportedly skipped team training to force through his move to Inter Milan.
Di Canio warned that such actions can tarnish a player’s image no matter their talent, arguing that true professionalism means fulfilling your duties even in tense transfer situations.
Lookman transfer standoff intensifies
Inter Milan have already had two bids worth around €45 million rejected, with Atalanta holding firm at their €50 million valuation.
Arsenal and Napoli are monitoring the situation, but Lookman’s desire appears set on joining Inter. Signed from RB Leipzig for €15 million in 2022, he has now handed in a transfer request and is training alone rather than with the squad.
Atalanta’s refusal to sell to a Serie A rival is fuelling the deadlock, with the club more open to dealing with foreign sides to avoid strengthening direct competitors.
Lookman feels he deserves the chance to leave after three standout seasons in Italy, but his absence from training has escalated tensions, creating a chaotic standoff with less than three weeks remaining in the transfer window.
