With Osimhen watching on Napoli were able to snatch a point from the jaws of defeat with a late equaliser

Victor Osimhen’s presence in the stands for Napoli was not enough of a boost to help the Partenopei grab all three points at home against Genoa in Serie A, but they were able to avoid losing thanks to a 90th minute Cyril Ngonge equaliser.

How it happened

The Nigerian forward returned from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was pictured training alone, but was not deemed fit enough for Napoli’s tie against Genoa after the exertions of the tournament.

With Osimhen in the stands, Napoli struggled at home against Genoa and were unable to create clear goalscoring chances during the first half.

The hosts were hit with a sucker punch early in the second half as Morten Frendrup opened the scoring for Genoa against the run of play two minutes after the restart.

Napoli laboured for an equaliser and finally found one on the stroke of 90 minutes as Ngonge found space in the box to snatch a point for Napoli.

The draw leaves Napoli 9th in Serie A, 16 points behind Atalanta in fourth, leaving their hopes of qualifying for Europe next season hanging by a thread.

In Osimhen’s absence Napoli have struggled to find the back of the net and the club hope to have him back for their crucial UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Barcelona this week.
