NPFL Preview: Remo Stars vs Abia Warriors is a survival test — Red flags everywhere

Champions are not supposed to look like this. Not this fragile. Not this unsure. Not this close to the trapdoor.

NPFL defending champions, Remo Stars, currently sit 19th on the table - Four consecutive defeats and one draw in their last five matches heading into matchday 26 this weekend.

22 goals scored and 31 conceded say the aura is gone, the alarm bells are loud from Ikenne. This is no longer a blip in form, it’s a pattern. And when patterns persist, they become an identity.

That’s a red flag.

At home, the numbers don’t offer much comfort. Seven wins and three defeats in 12 sounds respectable by all standards, but 15th in the home rankings tells a different and deeper story - this fortress is no longer feared.

Champions usually squeeze (permit me, Yema) life out of opponents on their own turf. But Nigerian champions Remo have been leaking instead.

Then comes Abia Warriors, fifth on the table, organised, efficient, and dangerous from home heading into the decisive clash between the two teams.

Five away wins in 12 games is not accidental in the NPFL. They have scored 20 goals and conceded 17, that is structure. That’s balance.

Even their recent wobble, two defeats and three draws, which including the goalless affair in the Southeast derby against Enugu Rangers last weekend, does not scream crisis the way Remo’s does.

And that’s what makes this particular fixture on Sunday brutal.

Because if Remo Stars lose again, this stops being about poor form and becomes a proper relegation narrative. Defending champions flirting with the drop is not drama, it is collapse.

Abia Warriors, meanwhile, have opportunities written all over this. Beta the holders on their own ground, and the top four ambition strengthens. But drop points again, and the momentum stalls.

So, this is not just a match, it is a survival test for Remo Stars and a credibility test for Abia Warriors. Pressure does not just expose teams, it defines them as well.
