Nigeria's 2nd tier of club football feeds into the top division: the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), and into the 3rd division: the Nationwide League One (NLO).

With two game weeks to the end of the 2023 season, the Nigeria National League (NNL) has reiterated the conditions for promotion and demotion of clubs in the current season.

The NNL is the second tier of club football in Nigeria, and feeds into the top division: the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), and the third division: the Nationwide League One (NLO).

Promotion: Super 8 playoff awaiting group winners

With the NNL 2023 season, divided into two conferences: Northern and Southern, which comprises a further eight sub-groups: A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, B3 and B4 - four groups per conference, only winners of the eight groups will stand a chance at promotion.

At the end of the regular season - which is to be concluded in two weeks' time - a Super 8 playoff will decide which four of the eight teams (the top-ranked 4 in the playoff) will gain promotion to the NPFL.

The playoff which would hold at a neutral venue to be considered by the NNL, will also serve as the tournament that would produce the champion of the 2023 NNL season.

Relegation: 12 teams to go down to NLO

The 2023 NNL season will also see 12 teams relegated from NNL to the NLO at the end of the regular season, eight of these being the bottom-ranked teams from each of the eight groups.

These eight teams who would be automatically relegated for finishing last in their groups, are to be completed by an additional four teams which would be decided via a relegation playoff.

The eight teams to compete in the relegation playoff will be the second to the last (bottom) teams in each of the eight groups. The best four performing teams in the relegation playoff will remain in the NNL for another season, while the worst four performing teams in the playoff will join the eight automatically relegated teams in the NLO.
