The Red Devils were made to rue missed chances as West Ham struck late to seal a dramatic point
Manchester United were left stunned after an 83rd-minute goal from Soungoutou Magassa snatched a point for the visiting West Ham on a disappointing night in Old Trafford.
A goal from Diogo Dalot just before the hour mark gave Manchester United hope of a second consecutive victory in the Premier League, before those hopes were dashed by Magassa's late strike in the 1-1 draw.
Man United vs West Ham: How it happened
The visitors created the first big moment when Aaron Wan-Bissaka set up Mateus Fernandes, only for Casemiro to deflect his shot wide.
United pushed forward with increasing pressure, forcing Alphonse Areola into a fine save from Bryan Mbeumo before Wan-Bissaka, Jean-Clair Todibo and Bruno Fernandes all went close in a chaotic spell.
Jarrod Bowen’s lively runs kept West Ham threatening, but summer signing Senne Lammens denied him with a smart stop.
The second half opened with more United momentum as Mbeumo twice tested the Hammers’ defence, but Freddie Potts and Tomáš Souček intervened decisively.
Despite half-chances at both ends, it was Manchester United who eventually broke the deadlock just before the hour. Casemiro’s effort fell kindly to Diogo Dalot, who calmly slotted home.
West Ham responded with determination, and after more desperate Man United defending, including Noussair Mazraoui clearing Bowen’s flick off the line, Soungoutou Magassa struck in the 84th minute to score his first goal for the club and secure the equaliser.
Late opportunities for Mohamadou Kanté and Bruno Fernandes went begging, leaving West Ham still in the relegation zone and United sitting eighth after their third draw in five games.
