United started firmly on the front foot and were rewarded for their endeavour with a fine early goal.
After just 8 minutes, the returning Mason Mount collected a pass from Bryan Mbeumo and finished into the far corner.
Amorim’s men were particularly dangerous down the right, where Amad Diallo and Mbeumo both saw curling strikes kept out by Robin Roefs, before the Sunderland goalkeeper made a tremendous save to tip Bruno Fernandes’ strike.
It seemed only a matter of time until the second goal arrived, and Benjamin Seško was the man to finally get it, converting his second goal in as many matches with a close-range volley after Sunderland failed to deal with Diogo Dalot’s long throw.
The second half featured fewer clear-cut chances, and Sunderland attacked with much more purpose.
However, the Red Devils held on for a crucial win ahead of the international break.
