Lampard established a legendary status at the club, but his managerial spell was far from convincing.

Chelsea's hierarchy is considering approaching Frank Lampard to manage the club until the end of the season.

The manager’s post at Stamford Bridge fell vacant when Graham Potter was sacked after a 2-0 Premier League loss to Aston Villa.

Lampard, who was among the fans when Chelsea played and drew 0-0 against Liverpool on Tuesday, could now return to manage the club, as per The Sun.

The former England midfielder has been without a job since he was sacked by Everton – after a poor run of games – in January.

The club’s record scorer was in charge of the Blues for 18 months before he was shown the door. He guided Chelsea to the FA Cup final and helped them secure a Champions League spot despite the club serving a FIFA transfer ban for two windows.

Chelsea are currently under the management of Bruno Saltor, who was given the club’s first-team interim responsibilities after Potter was sacked.

After the Liverpool game, Saltor was cagey when asked whether he expects to be in charge against Wolves, who are Chelsea’s next opponent.

"As it stands, I just expect to go home to rest and focus on hour by hour, day by day," said the former Brighton star.

"The owner knows and the staff are going to be as professional as we can. We try to represent this club the best we can. We know the standards here and what is demanded."

Chelsea are set to face Real Madrid in the Champions League in the quarter-final. The first leg will be played on April 12.
