Spain's World Cup hero Hermoso has been omitted from Euro 2025 squad

Ahead of the European Championships in Switzerland, Spain has excluded her record goalscorer and World Cup hero, Jenni Hermoso from the team.

The 2025 UEFA Women's European Championship is set to commence on July 2, with Spain kicking off their campaign in Group B against Portugal the following day.

Who is Hermoso

Hermoso, who has netted an impressive 57 goals in 123 appearances for her national side, was a key figure in Spain's triumphant 2023 World Cup campaign in Australia.

The 35-year-old currently playing for Tigres, featured in all six of Spain's Euro 2025 qualifiers, with her last international appearance dating back to October 2024.

Her omission is part of a substantial overhaul, with head coach Montse Tomé making 12 changes to the World Cup-winning squad.

The decision to leave out Hermoso, who was at the centre of the widely publicized non-consensual kiss by former Spanish football federation boss Luis Rubiales after the World Cup final, an incident for which Rubiales was later found guilty of sexual assault has naturally drawn considerable attention.

Why Hermoso was left out of Spain's Euro 2024 squad

Head coach Montse Tomé addressed the difficult decision during the squad announcement, emphasising the depth of talent within the Spanish ranks.

"I understand Jenni is an important player. I spoke with her about her situation and we've done the same work with her as everyone else," Tomé explained.

The coach said further, "We have assessed her performances for Tigres and spoken with her coach."

Despite Hermoso's absence, the squad boasts a formidable array of talent, including two-time Ballon d'Or winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí.

Also included are Mariona Caldentey, fresh from Arsenal's Champions League final victory over Barcelona, and Manchester City's Leila Ouahabi, adding further strength to the European champions.
