However, they went on to claim a 2-1 victory over the Blues at Old Trafford, with both teams getting a red card in the game.

Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro sealed the win, despite Chelsea’s late pressure to get an equaliser.

Amorim speaks on team win

When asked if the result was a message to his detractors, Man United head manager Amorim was dismissive, as reported by Daily Mail.

"It's nothing about that!" Amorim said. "People don't have too many good things to say about our team and our results. I understand that I'm just joking around all the time.

"I have nothing to say to the critics; they are right most of the time. But we won, and that's a good thing for us."

After the final whistle, Amorim was quick to warn his squad against complacency, especially given their sluggish start to the season and a tough away fixture against Brentford looming next weekend.

"Now it's time to create a bit of momentum," he stated. "We deserved the win, but it's just one win. We need to think about the next one."

"It's really important because I understand the environment around the team and the coach. This game was really important for that."

"It's Manchester United winning a game at home, it's just that. Three points. It's about trying to create momentum."

"We cannot forget that we suffer a lot when we are not at our maximum in all aspects. We can lose against Grimsby, but we can win against any team. We need to take that into the next week."

"Of course, it's really good to win; you can feel the environment in the dressing room. But forget that feeling. I prefer the other feeling now because it will bring us the urgency to win again. That is really important."
