Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino clarified that Noni Madueke was not supposed to take the winning penalty as the Blues defeated Crustal Palace 2-1.

Chelsea secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge, bouncing back to winning ways.

The match saw Mykhailo Mudryk opening the scoring, only for Michael Olise to level the proceedings with a sublime volley. In the dying minutes of regulation time, the Blues were awarded a penalty kick following a VAR review.

Pochettino reveals penalty decision in win over Palace

Pochettino claims captain, Conor Gallagher was supposed to take it, but left it to Madueke, who coolly converted the winner. On the decision for Noni Madueke to take the penalty in place of suspended duo Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer.

Pochettino said: “It was Conor [Gallagher] and I said to him ‘It’s you but if you’re not confident enough give it Noni’. 

“I am so glad and so happy. He came from the bench and showed this hunger and confidence.”
