Super Eagles legend Sunday Oliseh has moved to set the record straight, denying reports that he criticised the appointment of head coach Eric Chelle.
The Nigerian head coach failed to qualify the Super Eagles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, crashing out in the playoffs.
Their World Cup dreams were dashed following a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo, after the match ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
In the wake of this setback, several reports emerged suggesting that Oliseh had condemned the decision to hire Chelle.

‘Well positioned, pacy, decisive’ — Super Eagles legend hails Fredrick after Gabon masterclass
Former Nigeria national team captain and coach Sunday Oliseh has hailed the contributions of youngster Benjamin Frederick against Gabon
Oliseh clear the air
The ex-Super Eagles captain took to the social media platform X to clarify his position, stating his comments had been taken out of context.
Oliseh explained that his remarks were not an attack on Chelle's abilities but rather an expression of his disappointment that a foreign coach was chosen over a qualified Nigerian candidate.
Despite his preference for a local coach, Oliseh acknowledged the Malian tactician's positive influence on the team since his appointment.
"Correction please, I didn't criticise the coach, watch the clip again," Oliseh wrote. "I was unhappy he was appointed instead of a qualified Nigerian, but so far he (Chelle) has done relatively well. Let's call a spade a spade!"
With the World Cup now off the table, the Super Eagles will turn their attention to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Nigeria has been placed in Group C, where they will face Uganda, Tunisia, and Tanzania.
