Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi shared the reason behind his limited use of the English language.

Inter Miami’s captain, Lionel Messi, recently revealed that he can speak English adequately but avoids communicating in the language publicly due to embarrassment.

The 38-year-old was born and raised in Spanish-speaking Argentina before leaving for Spain at 11 years old; hence, he exclusively speaks Spanish.

Many fans have wondered if he could converse in English, especially now that he plays in America, a predominantly English-speaking country. While teammates have shared anecdotes of Messi speaking English, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has now confirmed it himself.

What Messi said

The father of three had a deeply personal interview on an Argentine podcast, Luzu TV. He spoke about his traits and quirks and temperament.

The interviewers asked him if he can speak English, and he responded, saying, "I think I can SPEAK ENGLISH well enough to make myself understood and communicate, but I’m embarrassed,” he said. "In private, I speak a bit more English, but on camera, I don’t like it."

Meanwhile, Messi characterised himself as weird, revealing his obsession with orderliness and his preference for solitude.  "I know I’m a bit weird than most people in some things... I like being alone a lot. Sometimes the chaos at home with the three kids running all over the place ends up saturating me, and I need my moments of loneliness."
