The former Liverpool defender claimed that the AFCON is not a major tournament in a podcast while he was speaking about Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.

He said, “Listen, it's a hard one to say, you know, I think I have seen a lot of African legends reacting already towards Jamie Carragher, a player that I play against.
"I think Jay-Jay Okocha put it in a nice way. Come on Jamie Carragher. Will I love my son to be a footballer and be named Jamie Carragher? The answer is No. Will I love to play football like Carragher?... It's sad for him to look down on our continent.

“But what can we do. This is him coming out with who he is, and he has shown who he is now. Because at the end of the day it's not like a choice.

“I feel sorry. I feel sad, but you know, as I say again, if some intelligent players say those things, I can come out and say something even, but from Jamie Carragher, let's just take it as a joke and move on.
“Whatever he's saying has nothing to do with football, so he's lucky he's from England. He's lucky to be on TV and he's talking trap so let him enjoy whatever he's saying.”
