'He complained' - Man City key man hands Guardiola fresh injury blow ahead of new season
Manchester City and Pep Guardiola are facing renewed concerns over Rodri’s recovery from a serious knee injury sustained last season.
The Spain international midfielder, who returned to consistent action during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, was gradually reintegrated into matches.
After two 30-minute appearances in group stage games against Wydad AC and Al Ain, Rodri started against Juventus, playing nearly 70 minutes despite an initial plan for 45.
In the last-16 match against Al Hilal, he came on early in the second half but was substituted in extra time at the 100-minute mark, raising questions about his condition.
Post-match, Guardiola told reporters, “We have to see Rodri; he complained about his [injury] situation.”
According to MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, Rodri reported fitness issues over the past week.
The extent of his concerns is unclear, but Manchester City’s unexpected 3-4 loss to Al Hilal has granted Rodri four weeks’ rest before training resumes in late July, ahead of the Premier League opener against Wolves on August 16.
