Kompany was at Man City for 11 years and was one of the most beloved players at the club and indeed in the club's history.

He played under current City boss, Guardiola from 2017 to 2019 and although he struggled with injuries towards the end of his career he remained vital until the end.

During his time at City, he made 360 appearances and won 12 trophies.

Kompany became the manager of Championship side Burnley last summer and he has done an exceptional job at the helm.

His side are first in the Championship and into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup where they face Manchester City.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference before City welcome Newcastle on Saturday, Guardiola was asked about a reunion with his former captain at the Etihad.

He was full of praise for Kompany, suggesting the Belgian could succeed him in the future.

He said: “Sooner or later, he will be the manager of Man City.

“When? I don’t know but I am pretty sure it will happen. It is my feeling. Maybe I am wrong but he has all the attributes. “Work ethic, knowledge of the game, respect, and experience. Doing what he has done is so difficult and he is doing really well.

“He knows the club and the environment. He knows what our people need. The destiny is there.”

Burnley are currently 12 points clear at the top of England’s second tier and look set to gain automatic promotion to the Premier League next season which will be a remarkable achievement for Kompany.

The lunchtime kick-off on Saturday gives City a chance to close the gap on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League when they take on Newcastle at the Etihad.
