Greenwood will continue his development at the Riverside with ex-Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick in charge at Boro.

Championship club Middlesbrough has unveiled a second signing following the arrival of young forward Sam Greenwood.

Greenwood has joined the club on a season-long loan until the summer of 2024 from fellow Championship side Leeds United.

Both clubs confirmed the transfer on their respective social media platforms on Wednesday.

"Greenwood is our second signing of the day," Boro posted on their account on X.com, formerly Twitter.

Greenwood’s brief

The versatile forward kicked off his football career at Sunderland, his hometown club where he played for the academy.

He will then join Premier League side Arsenal as a 16-year-old where he spent two years before Leeds United came calling in 2020.

The 21-year-old made his Leeds debut under the guidance of the enigmatic Marcelo Bielsa and went on to enjoy good game time in the Premier League.

Last season he made a total of 35 appearances across all competitions, 25 of which were in the Premier League as the Lilly Whites suffered relegation to the Championship.

His new manager, Carrick, believes that he will give Boro greater tactical flexibility given his talent and ability to play with both feet.

“Sam is a really talented player,” he told the club’s website. “He’s two-footed and he gives us greater flexibility.

“We’re looking forward to working with both him and Lewis O’Brien, and helping them develop as players.”
