Omala missed out on the title of top scorer last season after Elvis “Machapo” Rupia narrowly beat him to the award by scoring a record-breaking 27 goals.

Gor Mahia captain Philemon Otieno has revealed how his teammates are helping Benson Omala go for the golden boot come the end of the season.

Omala missed out on the title of top scorer last season after Elvis “Machapo” Rupia, then of Kenya Police, scored a record-breaking 26 goals to break the long-standing 40-year record held By Maurice Aloo “Sonyi”.

He did however equal that 26-goal record set by the record goalscorer, but this season, he is determined to go one better and go for glory.

Speaking before Gor Mahia played Talanta on Sunday, Otieno revealed that his teammates are “doing everything they can” to help him become the top scorer at the end of the season.

“He is doing good and at the moment he is having a good season and we as his teammates are doing everything we can to help him become the topscorer at the end of the league,” Otieno said.

Omala himself has credited his teammates for his goalscoring prowess over the last two seasons.

“I like scoring goals. That is my job because if I score, my team wins so I have to continue scoring goals. Last season, I scored 26 goals, I want to surpass that. That is what motivates me.

“They [his team-mates] alway motivate me to score goals by giving me passes, they have trust in me and I do not want to let them down.”

Omala has already scored nine goals (at the time of writing before the FC Talanta match) this season from 14 league appearances.

Last season, he averaged 0.79  goals a match from 33 appearances. After 14 games, he is averaging a scoring rate of 0.64 goals a match, but will be hoping he can match up to the standards from last season if he is to stand a chance of walking away with the ultimate price.

KCB’s Francis Kahiro and fellow Harambee Stars striker Moses Shummah are his closest contenders for the award this season with six goals apiece.
