After a disappointing season in the NPFL, Rangers International could find solace in the FA Cup, a title the Flying Antelopes have not won since 2018.

NPFL side Rangers International have set their sight on a seventh title in the Nigerian Federation Cup, FA Cup, after booking a place in the final.

Rangers needed a late penalty to see off a stubborn Plateau United side 1-0 at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode on Thursday evening.

As reported by Pulse Sports Nigeria, the reliable forward, Godwin Obaje, was the hero of the day as he kept his calm to convert from 12 yards to fire Rangers into the final.

The Flying Antelopes had some good chances early in the game but met an inspired Suraj Ayeleso in goal for United.

Abdul Maikaba, the Rangers boss, will look to pacify the club fans with the title after a poor season in the NPFL.

According to the former Akwa United tactician, while it was a good and hard-fought game, he believes it could have gone either way.

“I am a very happy man today after winning against my former side, Plateau United,” Maikaba told the club media.

“It was a hard-fought encounter that could have gone either way but after our tactical change in the second half which pushed our opponent back and in one of our forays upfront, we were rewarded with a clear penalty call almost in the 90th minute of play and we converted to qualify for the final.”

Speaking further on the FA Cup, Maikaba noted the his desire is to lead the club to another glory in the competition.

“Congratulations to all Rangers fans,” he added. It is my desire to win the Federation Cup for Rangers for the seventh time.”

Rangers will have their hands full in the final match of the competition against Bendel Insurance of Benin, who defeated Warri Wolves in the other semifinal to set up a repeat of the 1978 and 1981 finals.

Bendell Insurance thrashed Rangers 3-0 in 1978 before the Flying Antelopes avenged the defeat three years later following a 2-0 win.
