Federation Cup: Rangers edge Plateau United to set up repeat of 1978, 1981 finals

The 2023 final of Nigeria's Federation Cup will see Rangers take Bendel Insurance in what would historical fixture.

Enugu State's Rangers have defeated Plateau United thanks to a last-minute goal, to secure their place in the final of Nigeria's 2023 Federation Cup.

Thanks to the victory, the Flying Antelopes are now a place closer to getting their seventh cup title, having won this competition in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1981, 1983 and 2018.

Obaje give Rangers win in Ijebu-Ode

Going into Thursday's semifinal fixture at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu- Ode, Rangers had knocked Adamawa United, Kano Pillars, FC Ebedei and Doma United from the competition.

To secure their place in the 2023 final, the six-time champions who found difficulty in breaking down Plateau United, got their opportunity in the 90th minute, with Godwin Obaje, cooly converting the penalty.

It would become the first final that the Enugu side would feature in since they last did when they won the title in 2018. Overall, it will be Rangers' 13th time in the final of Nigeria's cup competition.

Rangers to meet old foes Bendel Insurance

Meanwhile, in Lagos, three-time champions Bendel Insurance defeated 2013 finalist Warri Wolves to secure their place in the final of the 2023 edition.

The Benin Arsenals had gotten themselves into the final by edging Wolves in a penalty shootout after the game at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan had ended 0-0 in regulation time.

The meeting will see Bendel Insurance and Rangers clash in a cup final for the third-ever time after they both participated in the 1978 and 1981 finals.
