Federation Cup: Bendel Insurance knockout Sunshine Stars, edge closer to ending 43-year drought

Bendel Insurance are three-time champions of Nigeria's Federation Cup, with their championships coming in 1972, 1978 and 1980.

Bendel Insurance have taken a step closer to clinching their first Federation Cup title in 43 years, by knocking out Sunshine Stars from the competition on Sunday.

The quarterfinal encounter held at the Awka City Stadium in Anambra, saw Bendel Insurance secure a 1-0 win over fellow Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side - a result they've maintained all competition.

Bendel Insurance's Road to the Semifinal

The Benin Arsenals had headed to Awka on Sunday, on the back of 1-0 victories over ABS FC in the round of 64, Ahudiya in the round of 32, and three-time cup champions Heartland in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Sunshine Stars progressed to this stage have edged out Nasarawa State's Basira, Kaduna State's Standard FC, and Abuja's EFCC.

A second-half penalty by Imade Osarenkhoe was all Monday Odigie's side needed on Sunday to secure yet another slim victory in the cup, as well as, extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 22 matches.

Bendel Insurance edging closer to league and cup double

Having come two steps closer to winning Nigeria's cup this season, Insurance will now be eyeing to secure their first title in 43 years, having last won this title in 1980. They also stand a chance of winning a league and cup double having also qualified for the 2023 NPFL Super 6 playoffs.

The Benin club are three-time champions of Nigeria's Federation Cup, with their championships coming in 1972, 1978 and 1980.

They would take on second division side Warri Wolves in the semifinals of the 2023 Federation Cup.
