Former Chelsea and Germany midfielder Michael Ballack has named Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona as the two standout favourites to lift the UEFA Champions League this season, while dismissing the chances of heavyweights Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.
What Ballack said
Speaking to Sport Bild via GOAL, Ballack explained why he believes the defending champions PSG and Hansi Flick’s Barcelona are a level above the rest in this year’s competition.
“Of course, FC Barcelona,” Ballack said.
He continued, “The team is strong. They have an outstanding difference-maker [Lamine Yamal] in their ranks and in Hansi Flick, a coach who’s a perfect fit.
“You’ve to count Paris Saint-Germain, as defending champions, among the top favorites.”
However, the 2002 Champions League finalist was quick to rule out three of Europe’s most successful clubs, suggesting they no longer sit at the top tier of contenders.
“Bayern are not among the absolute top favourites for me, but rather a challenger. I also don’t count Manchester City and Real Madrid,” Ballack added.
Ballack believes the balance of power has shifted toward Barcelona’s new era under Flick and the star power of PSG.
Both sides will begin their group-stage campaigns later this month, with Barcelona opening against Newcastle United, while PSG look to defend their crown after last season’s triumph.
