The match in brief
While their performance cannot be categorised as clinical with the slew of missed opportunites during the game, but they showed bite, grit and ruthlessness.
Palmer opened the scoring on the day. His first goal came from a precise finish after Malo Gusto's pass, and his second followed a dazzling solo run.
After PSG seemed stunned following Palmer's second goal, he set up Joao Pedro for the third goal, which the Brazilian coolly chipped over Gianluigi Donnarumma, solidifying Chelsea's lead. Chelsea had chances to compound the scoreline, and PSG had the chances to pull one back, but the second-half did not influence the scoreline, and the three goals Chelsea scored in the first half was enough to clinch the trophy.
What Palmer said
Speaking after the game, Palmer, who was the standout player of the match, as he was during the Conference League final against Real Betis a few weeks ago, spoke to the reporters.
He took a swipe at the many critics of their young squad, stating authoritatively that Enzo Maresca was building a special squad.
“People doubted us, they didn’t believe in us… people talk shit about us all season,” Palmer said after the match, per Fabrizio Romano. “But let me tell you, Enzo Maresca is building something special at this football club.”
Meanwhile, Cole Palmer was named the Player of the Tournament for his incredible outside and the World Championships for clubs. His teammate, Robert Sanchez, received the Best Goalkeeper award.
