Christopher Nkunku's start to life at Chelsea has been plagued by several setbacks

In a significant blow to Chelsea's campaign, manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Christopher Nkunku will be sidelined due to an injury sustained during the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool

The French forward's absence comes at a critical time for the Blues, as they prepare for their FA Cup fifth-round tie against Leeds United.

Nkunku injured in ill-fated EFL Cup final

Nkunku, who made a move from RB Leipzig to Chelsea last summer, was brought on in the 67th minute during the Carabao Cup final held at Wembley. Despite his efforts, Chelsea ultimately faced defeat against Liverpool after the match extended into extra time. This appearance marked only the tenth for Nkunku with Chelsea, highlighting his challenging start at the club due to injury setbacks.

Pochettino, speaking ahead of the upcoming game with Leeds, shared insights into Nkunku's current situation. "We need to evaluate him (Nkunku) every day," he stated, indicating the forward's uncertain recovery timeline. The initial prognosis suggests Nkunku could be out of action for three to four weeks, although the club remains hopeful that the duration will not extend further.

A series of unfortunate events for Nkunku

Reflecting on Nkunku's time with Chelsea, Pochettino remarked on the difficulties the player has faced since joining the team. After an impressive start in the pre-season training in America, where Nkunku was "flying on the pitch," he suffered a knee injury that has significantly hampered his ability to contribute to the team's efforts. "It’s nearly eight months later," Pochettino noted, emphasizing the length of Nkunku's struggle with injuries.

Pochettino also addressed the challenges of managing expectations around Nkunku, given his previous form in the Bundesliga. "We have in our head the potential best Nkunku that everyone knows from the Bundesliga, but he can’t be that player," he explained. The manager stressed the unfairness of judging Nkunku based on his current situation, as his injuries have prevented him from reaching his peak performance levels.

As Chelsea navigates through this setback, the focus remains on supporting Nkunku through his recovery while adjusting team strategies in his absence. The upcoming weeks will be crucial for Chelsea as they aim to maintain their competitive edge in domestic competitions without one of their key forwards. With hopes of Nkunku's swift recovery, Chelsea fans and the team alike await his return to the pitch, eager to see the French international make his mark in the Premier League.
