Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been hit with a one-match touchline ban and a ₦14 million (£8,000) fine following his dramatic outburst during Chelsea’s 2–1 victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian tactician’s passionate celebrations after his team’s stoppage-time winner proved too much for referee Anthony Taylor, who sent him off deep into injury time.

When Chelsea netted the decisive goal in the 96th minute against Liverpool, Maresca could not contain his emotions. The 44-year-old sprinted down the touchline, fist-pumping and celebrating wildly with his players in front of the home crowd.

His passionate display, however, crossed the line in the eyes of the officials. The Football Association (FA) confirmed that Maresca’s conduct amounted to improper behavior.

“It was alleged that the manager acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour during the fixture, which led to his dismissal around the 96th minute,” the FA said in a statement.

Maresca later admitted the charge and accepted the standard punishment. The ban means he will be absent from the touchline when Chelsea travel to face Nottingham Forest in their next Premier League fixture. A setback for the Blues as they aim to maintain momentum in their chase of the top four.

Despite the disciplinary setback, Maresca’s energy and passion have been key factors in Chelsea’s improving performances this season.

The win over Liverpool marked a significant boost, pushing the Blues to seventh place in the Premier League table with 11 points, just five behind league leaders Arsenal.

While the fine of ₦14 million may not sting Chelsea’s pockets, Maresca’s one-game absence could have a tactical impact. His intensity on the sidelines has often driven the team forward, especially in close matches like the one against Liverpool.

For Chelsea fans, though, Maresca’s fire and emotion are a refreshing sign of a manager fully invested in restoring the club’s pride — even if it occasionally costs him a seat on the touchline.
