Leverkusen’s Spanish coach Xabi Alonso shook things up with four changes from the side that drew with St. Pauli, while Augsburg’s boss swapped out Fredrik Jensen and Phillip Tietz for Petar Jakić and Junior Essende after their win over Wolfsburg.

The hosts controlled the ball early, but Augsburg showed a threat on the counter. But it was Leverkusen who struck first in clinical fashion.

A lightning break saw Florian Wirtz spin past a defender to release Tella down the right. The Nigerian winger’s precise pass found Patrik Schick, who rifled a shot from outside the box that deflected past Augsburg’s Finn Dahmen for his 19th goal of the season.

Tella nearly turned scorer when he nodded in a whipped cross from Wirtz, but VAR ruled it offside.

Undeterred, Leverkusen doubled their lead before halftime. After a penalty shout for a push on Alejandro Grimaldo was waved off, Buendía latched onto a cleared ball, danced into space, and curled a beauty into the far corner.

The second half saw Leverkusen manage the game expertly, but Onyeka, Augsburg’s Nigerian midfielder, battled fiercely and won 12 duels in a tireless display.

Despite his efforts, Augsburg couldn’t break through Leverkusen’s composed defence. Boniface, Leverkusen’s Nigerian striker, remained an unused substitute, watching his compatriots shine.

Buendía and Onyeka were standout performers, but Tella’s flair and assist underlined Nigeria’s growing influence in the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen’s champions marched on, their depth and quality too much for a spirited but outclassed Augsburg side.
