Ingwe punished Gor Mahia with their only two shots on target, ending a seven-year winless run against their sworn rivals.

AFC Leopards head coach Patrick Aussems has heaped praise on his charges for “winning easily” against Gor Mahia at a heavily packed Nyayo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Ingwe had gone seven years without a victory in the Mashemeji Derby until Maxwell Otieno’s free header from a corner kick into the back post hit Gad Mathews’ net in the 43rd minute.

The FKF Cup semi-finalists had been on the back foot for the first half-hour of the match but found their groove after going ahead through Victor Omune from the penalty spot, and were able to dominate the match from then on.

“Last seven years are already a distant memory,” he said. “We can forget that now. This was an easy victory and we won easily,” he added.

"It was a very good game. We tried to play good football. I was using the game to prepare for next week, and of course, it was a bonus given the victory came.

“We were disciplined and took advantage of our opportunities. I am also thankful for Azam TV for broadcasting a good game of Kenyan football and it can only be between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.”

Leopards struggled to be prolific from open play in front of goal for large parts of the game, but have now taken their opportunities. They scored both their goals from a penalty and freekick situation just moments after Benson Omala had missed a penalty that could have put his side up.

“Set pieces are an opportunity to score goals. We were not really lucky in set pieces the last few games. We got a penalty and a corner during the game and also had some opportunities but at the end of the day, the most important thing is the opportunities, so it is something important.

“For sure, the penalty they missed gave us confidence but I told my players that the pressure was on Gor, so we played without pressure and got the three points.”

Ingwe will face Kakamega Homeboyz in the semi-finals of the FKFCup on Saturday.
