A five-time Serie A-winning manager has warned Atalanta about the dangers of selling Ademola Lookman
Ademola Lookman’s summer in Bergamo has been filled with tension, transfer rumors, and a standoff with his club, but former AC Milan and Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello has urged Atalanta to hold on to the Nigerian star.
With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Lookman’s situation is shaping up to be one of Serie A’s most dramatic storylines.
Capello sounds the alarm over Lookman
Capello, speaking to Italian media, underlined how crucial Lookman remains to Atalanta’s ambitions this season, saying, “The Lookman affair is a significant one.
“We’re talking about a player who has made a significant impact in recent years, both in terms of goals and assists. If he were to stay, he would still be a key figure. If he were to leave, however, Atalanta would be forced to reinvent much of their attacking potential.”
The 27-year-old forward has been one of Atalanta’s most decisive players since arriving in Bergamo, and Capello believes losing him now could derail the club’s momentum.
Despite praising Atalanta’s structure and passion, the veteran coach concluded that Lookman’s case remains the defining factor in how far the team can go this season.
Turbulent summer and transfer links for Lookman
Lookman’s current standoff with Atalanta has been messy. After handing in a transfer request and removing the club from his social media profiles, he has been training separately from the main squad.
Atalanta responded with a €50 million price tag, which has so far discouraged potential buyers. Reports suggest the club may even fine him and withhold wages as punishment.
Inter Milan initially showed strong interest but withdrew, while Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Manchester City have been linked through his representatives.
With only days left in the window, Lookman’s next move, or lack of one, could define both his future and Atalanta’s season.
