Arsenal secured an emphatic win against Manchester City as the Citizens were thrashed at the Emirates.

The Gunners head into the game looking confident after qualifying automatically to the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.

Man City, who were just gradually building their winning momentum, could not hold the Gunners as they were ripped into pieces in a 5-1 defeat.

As it happened

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta made just one change to the side that beat Wolves last weekend: Captain Martin Odegaard replaced Ethan Nwaneri in midfield.

Guardiola made three changes to the Manchester City team that beat Chelsea last weekend. Stefan Ortega replaced Ederson in goal, and John Stones replaced Abdukodir Khusanov in defence.

The well-contested game opened with Arsenal striking the first blow after a mistake from Akaji. Martin Odegaard tapped the ball into an empty net, ending the first half with a one-goal lead.

The second half was a different ball game as Arsenal pumped in four goals from Thomas Partey, Lewis Skelly, Kai Havertz and Nathan Nwaneri after Erling Haaland got the equaliser for the Citizens.

The Gunners controlled the few minutes remaining in the game and held on to their empathic victory against Guadiola’s men.
