Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has blasted Liverpool fans over a recent incident involving Ghana's Antoine Semenyo
Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo delivered a dazzling display for Bournemouth against Liverpool on the opening day of the Premier League season, but his night was marred by racist abuse from the stands.
Manchester United legend Gary Neville stepped in to condemn the incident, while Bournemouth publicly celebrated their star’s resilience and character.
Gary Neville slams racist abuse at Anfield
The clash at Anfield was packed with drama, goals, and emotion as Liverpool kicked off their title defence with a 4-2 victory.
Yet, midway through the first half, the game was interrupted after Semenyo reported discriminatory abuse from fans. Neville, working as a Sky Sports pundit, did not mince his words.
“This casts a shadow over what should have been an amazing evening,” he said. “The first match of the Premier League season, a beautiful day, 62,000 fans in the stadium, and this guy was subjected to racist abuse and had to go to the referee to report it. It’s disgusting. I can’t even imagine what could come into someone’s mind to do that.”
His strong reaction comes amidst the ongoing battle football continues to face in eradicating racism from the game.
Bournemouth hail Semenyo’s brilliance and character
Despite the abuse, Semenyo turned in a heroic performance, scoring both goals for Bournemouth and briefly dragging his side level against the reigning champions.
His fearless display against Liverpool showed both skill and determination, nearly earning his side a point at Anfield.
Bournemouth, quick to show support, paid a heartfelt tribute on their official X account: “A great player but above all, a great human being. Only a strong character shows such resilience in those circumstances. We love you and are all with you, Antoine.”
For the Cherries, Semenyo’s brilliance on the pitch and strength off it set the tone for the challenges of the new season.
