Sadiq Umar has finally cleared the air on the controversial injury issue that saw him leave the Super Eagles camp after making the 25-man initial list for the tournament.

Sadiq Umar, Real Sociedad's Nigerian forward, missed Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations campaign due to injury but returned to club action quickly, featuring in Real Sociedad's Copa del Rey match just days later.

Umar's anticipated three-week absence due to a thigh injury saw him miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, with Paul Onuachu taking his place in the squad.

However, the striker has finally come out to clear the air on the issue, narrating how things went down.

Umar releases statement

In a statement released via his Instagram account, @sadiq.umar19, the striker revealed the true situation surrounding his alleged injury.

“Upon returning to my club and undergoing thorough examinations, the medical team revealed that I had only suffered a bruise, and as a result, I was cleared to resume training," wrote the 26-year-old forward.

The striker went ahead to reveal that he never faked any injury, debunking such rumours; rather, he only listened to what the Super Eagles medical team told him.

Real Sociedad won 2-0 against Osasuna in the Copa Del Rey two days ago to advance into the next round, and Umar featured for 18 minutes. The striker came on for Andre Silva in the 73rd minute but could not get on the score sheet. However, he will be looking to play from the start against Celta Vigo on January 20.
