Our World Cup final is on Saturday - Remo Stars boss Ogunmodede
Remo Stars manager Daniel Ogunmodede has reacted ahead of his side's top-of-the-table clash with Bendel Insurance, labelling the fixture as a 'World Cup final'.
The Sky Blues Stars made their way to the top of Group A of the 2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Wednesday, after an own goal and a left-footed finish by Godwin Odibo helped them defeat Shooting Stars in a Southwestern derby.
The 2-0 victory becomes Remo Stars' third consecutive win of the season, after having already overcome El-Kanemi Warriors and Gombe United in their first two matches.
Remo Stars confident ahead of Bendel Insurance game
Currently, Remo Stars sits at the top of Group A with a 100% record of nine points garnered from a possible nine, five goals scored and none conceded after three matches.
Speaking ahead of his side's Saturday engagement, Ogunmodede not only described Remo Stars' next fixture with second-placed Bendel Insurance as a 'World Cup final', but also revealed that it was the only thing his team had on their minds.
"Presently, I only know there's only one match left for us to play, and that's our next match," the Remo Stars gaffer said in his post-match conference on Wednesday.
"That's the mentality in our camp - a match at a time. I don't know if any other match exists right now.
"Our World Cup final is on Saturday, and that is the way we pick every game. We know that we're underdogs, and that's by appearance. Deep inside us, we know that we're walking lions."
Bendel Insurance vs Remo Stars head-to-head
Saturday's meeting at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City will be the third-ever in the NPFL between the Benin Arsenals, and the Sky Blues Stars.
In 2019, both sides were unable to find a way past each other after playing out a 1-1 draw in Sagamu before settling for a goalless stalemate in Benin City, four months later.
Their last ever meeting saw them produce four goals in a 2-2 thriller in a Nigeria National League (NNL) - Nigeria's second division - game.
Remo Stars go into Saturday's encounter as the only team in the NPFL, yet to concede a goal this season.
