The 1996 winners defeated the Tanzania U23 squad 3-1 on aggregate in October 2022, winning 2-0 at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan after both teams drew 1-1 in the first leg in Dar es Salaam to advance to this level of the series.

The winner of the two-leg match between Nigeria and Guinea will move on to the finals of the Africa U23 Cup of Nations, which will be held later in the year and hosted by Morocco. The African players who will represent the continent at the Men's Olympic Football Tournament in Paris the following year will also be chosen at the Moroccan event.
The return leg against the Guineans will be in Morocco on Monday, 27th.
