Nigeria stun New Zealand for historic first U-19 Women's World Cup win

Nigeria's Junior Female Yellow Greens have recorded a momentous victory at the 2025 ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup in Malaysia, defeating Test nation New Zealand by two runs in a thrilling encounter.

The win marks Nigeria's first-ever triumph at a Women's World Cup.

After Nigeria’s opening match against Samoa was delayed due to rain, the weather once again threatened to disrupt the game against New Zealand; the match was eventually pushed back by over two hours, resulting in a reduced-overs match.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to field, putting Nigeria in to bat first.

Captain Lucky Piety made history by hitting Nigeria's first-ever six at a Women's World Cup, anchoring the innings as the Junior Yellow Greens reached 65 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 13 overs.

Nigeria then produced a disciplined bowling performance, restricting New Zealand to 63 runs for the loss of six wickets in their chase.

This remarkable effort secured a historic two-run victory for Nigeria, marking a significant milestone for women's cricket in the country.
