Chukwuebuka Enekwechi produced the best performance by a Nigerian athlete at the Eugene Diamond League on Saturday, by breaking the long-standing Shot Put African Record.

Nigerian record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi wrote his name in the history books at the Eugene Diamond League, by becoming the first man from Africa to throw over 22m in the men's Shot Put event.

The 2022 Commonwealth silver medallist threw an African Record (AR) of 22.10m to finish third in the highly contested event as Joe Kovacs threw a world-leading mark of 22.48m, while Roger Steen narrowly edged out Enekwechi for second place, throwing a Personal Best (PB) of 22.11m.

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi smashed the Shot Put African Record at the Eugene Diamond League

With his monstrous throw, Enekwechi smashed Janus Robberts’ previous AR of 21.97m and obliterated his PB and Nigeria record of 21.91m achieved at the same meet last year.

The 32-year-old has been a consistent athlete over the years, steadily putting Nigeria on the global map since 2017. In addition, he has been undefeated on the continental scene in over five years, dominating as Africa's best shot put thrower.

Enekwechi's performance in Eugene, finally puts his name in the elite league of the world's best throwers and a medal contender at the World Championships in Tokyo in September.
