Representing Nigeria teaches me how to deal with pressure - Balogun reveals
Former Nigeria international Leon Balogun has explained how the intense demands of playing for the Super Eagles helped prepare him for the pressure-packed environment at Scottish giants Rangers.
Speaking on the Footballers Unfiltered Podcast, the experienced defender reflected on the expectations that come with representing Nigeria,
He describes the experience as an important part of his development as a professional footballer.
What Balogun said
Balogun noted that success is non-negotiable when wearing the national jersey.
“Representing Nigeria teaches you how to deal with pressure because defeat is never accepted,” he said.
He added, “When you play for Nigeria, you’re expected to win regardless of the opposition.”
The former Brighton defender also discussed his personal journey into the national team setup, having been raised in Germany and initially unfamiliar with Nigerian football culture.
He recalled his first call-ups, where he shared dressing rooms with established stars such as John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses.
According to Balogun, the unity and commitment within the squad left a lasting impression, even though the scrutiny could be intense during difficult periods.
“There was always a strong sense of responsibility and pride in playing for the country. It was a special experience, but when results didn’t go our way, the pressure was very heavy,” he explained.
