Nigeria will battle Mozambique in the AFCON round of 16 on Monday in Fez, after the Super Eagles recorded 100% in the group stage.

What Conde said

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Conde praised the Super Eagles while underlining his players’ ambition and belief.

“Nigeria is a big team,” Conde said. “Generally, we like this country and the people are good here. It’s a big opportunity for us to come here and play against a big country like Nigeria.”

The former Portugal international confirmed that Mozambique’s technical crew has conducted a detailed analysis of Nigeria.

“We observed the Nigerian team the same way we observed others. Nowadays, as coaches, we all work the same way,” he explained.

While Mozambique will remain faithful to its footballing identity, Conde revealed that tactical flexibility could be key, with formations likely to shift depending on how the game unfolds.

Aware of Nigeria’s attacking firepower, the coach emphasised the need for balance and discipline.

“Nigeria is a very strong team, and we all know they have a long process in building their attack,” he noted.

He added, “We will do all we can to break down their defence and also ensure their strikers are not able to attack.”

Conde also paid tribute to Nigeria’s rich football heritage, name-checking legendary striker Rashidi Yekini alongside current stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

“We respect Nigeria. Across generations, they have produced good players and now have top players in Europe,” he said.

However, the Mozambican tactician believes history and reputation will not decide the contest.

He added, “Our players will play for the Mozambican flag, and the game will start at 0–0. We know Nigeria is more powerful, but we will see who wants it more.”
