‘My players will win’ - Mozambique coach fires warning ahead of Nigeria clash
Mozambique head coach Chiquinho Conde has expressed strong belief in his team’s ability to compete with Africa’s heavyweight, the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Conde insisted that character, defensive solidity, and efficient attacking play are non-negotiable principles as they prepare to face Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16.
The Mambas will battle the Super Eagles on Monday in Fez, with Nigeria coming into the encounter full of confidence after recording a 100 percent win rate in the group stage.
What Conde said
Despite the challenge, Conde remains calm and optimistic about his players’ mindset and tactical discipline.
He said, “My principle is to show character, defend well, and attack better. We have fantastic attacking players who can decide a match at any time.”
The Mozambican coach emphasised the importance of game management, particularly in transition phases, as his side looks to match Nigeria’s quality and intensity.
“We must have constructive transitions and finish the game well. The players will be calm, with no pressure,” he added
Conde also highlighted the psychological aspect of the contest, stressing that belief and unity within the squad could make the difference against one of Africa’s most successful football nations.
“Happy players win matches. I know my players can deliver. We are humble, but we also have the ambition to make history for our people and our lives. There is nothing more special than winning against a big opponent like Nigeria,” he concluded.
