I will win AFCON 2027 - Chelle promises Nigerians
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has declared his ambition to win the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, following his side’s outstanding performance at the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.
Chelle led the Super Eagles to a third-place finish, earning widespread praise for their vibrant attacking football and tactical discipline.
The campaign marked one of Nigeria’s most impressive AFCON showings in recent history and has strengthened the belief that the team can go one step further next time.
Nigeria finished the tournament as the highest-scoring team, netting 14 goals. Notably, Chelle’s side did not concede a single goal from open play in the latter stages of the competition.
What Chelle said
Speaking in an interview with Canal+ Sport Afrique, Chelle reflected emotionally on Nigeria’s achievement and the personal significance of the journey.
“It’s a source of pride and relief. I went to see my mom and dad and told them I was coming back with the AFCON trophy. Mom, Dad, sorry, I’m only coming back with third place, but that’s already exceptional for me,” Chelle said.
The Malian coach also applauded Morocco for delivering a well-organised and memorable tournament.
“Thank you to this country for organising this AFCON so well. I had a lot of fun with my team. It was great. Thank you. It was extraordinary,” he added.
With the 2027 AFCON set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, Chelle made it clear that Mali’s mission is unfinished.
“We’ll meet again in a year, and God willing, I’ll bring that trophy home,” he concluded.
