Nigeria kick off their AFCON journey today with high expectations, and Ekong, who captained the side in previous tournaments, made it clear that he remains firmly behind the team despite no longer being part of the current squad.

In his message, the defender also reflected on his honour from the Nigerian government, describing it as a deeply emotional moment for him and his family.

Ekong expressed confidence in the team and pledged his unwavering support.

He said, “As our Super Eagles begin their AFCON journey today, I wish the team every success. As promised, I’ll be supporting them all the way. I believe in this group, our nation, and what we can achieve.

“I am honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (@officialABAT), for conferring on me the MFR national honour,” Ekong said.

He added, “To be recognised by my country yet again is a moment of immense pride and humility for my family and me.”

Ekong spoke passionately about what representing Nigeria has meant throughout his career, emphasising the responsibility that comes with wearing the national colours.

He continued, “Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the platform to live my dream through football. Wearing the green and white has always been a great responsibility, privilege, and a promise to give everything for the badge and for our people.”
